Status and ambitions for data-driven asset management in Scandinavian hydropower companies

ABSTRACT

This paper reports results from surveys among Scandinavian hydropower producers within three areas. The first part of the survey covers the acquisition and use of hydropower component condition data in asset management decision making. This part of the survey has been conducted previously in both 2015 and 2019, enabling analysis of respondents' development over the last ten years. We discuss findings and present possible explanations. The second part of the survey focuses on the use of models to predict the condition and failure probability of hydropower components. Barriers to increased use of these types of models are also explored. The final part of the survey investigates the status of data quality and metadata among the respondents. An important aim of the survey was to gain a better understanding of the needs of hydropower producers for models to estimate the development of component condition and failure probability. Such models are fundamental to enabling data-driven asset management, not only among hydropower producers but also in other asset-intensive industries.
